This website is for tracking the progress of the Schooner Phoenix.
The vessel was designed by Jay Benford. The hull was built professionally by
benford boat building company in 1972.
The boat house she was built in burned down around her.
The hull is ferrocement so the fire did no harm but the fella that commisioned her
did not want to complete her. So she ended up in lake union for a while.
In the early 80's she moved to bellingham and was made to look like a schooner,
but not to any real plan. The shrouds, for instance, were run through the bulwarks
and back up to themselves. No chain plates. But they did build a nice house on her.
In the 90's She moved to Lopez Island, WA. She was hauled out in 2005.
She received a new paint job topsides and bottom with new thruhulls, and various other things.
I purchased her in october, 2006. I began my efforts to build her to original
design in april 2008. I will eventually put up a page here that will have
all my notes from last april til current. Below are the sail plan and interior layout.
Her specifications are LOA 87', LOD 60', beam 17.75', draft 9.5',displacement 51 tons, sail area 3,500 sqr ft
